Description

Poem submitted by Thomas Burke to Alexander Purdie and John Dixon's Virginia Gazette: "On the Recovery of some Ladies in Norfolk from the Smallpox. Addressed to Mrs. Aitcheson." The poem was published with the intent to shame the Campbell, Aitcheson, and Parker families for choosing to inoculate their households from smallpox. The poem uses Hygieia--the Greek goddess of health--as a satire to show the gullibility of the families to protect their homes using dangerous inoculations.
