The Making of the Krasnow Institute

These are the original floor plan blueprints that were put together for the creation of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study [20]. By clicking on the photo, it will reveal the rest of the blueprints.

When beginning to build an institution, it is important to "build a collaborating team". Although Shelley passed unexpectedly in the middle of planning, he made sure to have a collaborative team to aid in helping build this institution. These people include the ones above and many others. Next, it is important to understand the construction situation. This would be the process Krasnow went through in wanting to build on his land and not being able to [14]. This process allows the builder to determine any hazards or other problems that may happen during construction. Next, it is important to map out what the goal and intended mission is for this institution and plan out how this goal will be achieved. In this case, that would be Krasnow stating "he wanted the school to use the bequest for the betterment of mankind" [24]. Next, it is important to plan everything. This is the process depicted above with the papers that display the floor plans and blueprints of the building. This information includes furniture that will be used, number of rooms and who they belong to, placement of restrooms and break rooms, etc [20,21]. Next, it is important to get everything approved. This includes the process below [22] with the VCE Release Request where Mark Dayvault sent out this request to VCE to approve of GMU's purchase of furniture for the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. Finally, it's important to carry out these plans and assemble everything [25].

These are phots of the copy of the original plans the creators had for the furniture that would be inside the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study. This is a detailed document that includes the rooms the furniture goes in, what is to be bought, and how much is to be bought [21].

This document is a copy of one of the original documents where the contributors to the construction of the Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study planned the interior design. This document is important for a multitude of reasons such as the following: it provides information on what interior designs in schools were in style in relation to today, it provides information on what has changed and how it effected the students and the the institution's activity, and lastly it allows the university to see what works and what doesn't. There has been very minimal change to the structure [and interior design] of the institution; however, the activity of the building has increased. The reasoning isn't definite, however, it could be because the amount of resources for research has increased, the fact that some class subjects at GMU aren't specified to a building, the seminar's might be making a large impact, classes are increasing their requirements in research, etc.

This is a document that was produced by the contributors to the creation of the Krasnow Institute. This document contains information about a few specific items that were orignally purchased to be used inside of the the Krasnow Insitute. It also contains information such as who was involved in the purchasing of these items, if the items were released or not, the date the authorization of the purchasing of the items were released, and additional remarks [22].

This is a photo of the letter that was sent to the builders of the Krasnow Institute to display the mission statement and reasoning Krasnow had for building this Institute [23].

This is a copy of the original document that was sent to those that contributed to the construction of Krasnow's dream. This document scratches the surface of Shelley Krasnow's life and his accomplishments and furthermore doesn't forget to include information on his dream. It states the institute's originial name as the "Virigina Institute for Advanced Study" and that Krasnow never specified an area of study for this institution. However, it does state that Krasnow "wanted scholars at the institute to have complete academic freedom of expression" and "he did not want these scholars to be tenured within the institute". Lastly, it states that he "expected the institute to have its own building containing offices, a common area and meetings rooms, and residental facilities for visiting scholars" [23]. This caused classes and events for the Krasnow Institute to be in another building on campus before it officially opened in the Spring of 1997 [24].
