Spy: Masons last days
While continuing to work as a Senator from Virginia, Mason has already planted a nurtured the seeds of secession. His final months in office were used to point the finger at the northern "agressors" and hoped to be useful to the Confederacy by remaining in office and collecting any information he could. This time as a spy is detailed in his collection of correspondence put together by his Daughter Virgina Mason.
By the fall of 1860, following the election of Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln, Mason had become to frustrated with the abolitionist north that he had come to the conclusion that the split was inevitable. “Mason supported a state convention to decide Virginia’s fate but had determined already what course he believed should be taken. In a letter to his sister-in-law, maintain that northerners “really seem to be blind and deaf to the exigency which is upon us, and them…the dissolution of the Union is a fixed fact. [South Carolina’s] example will be followed by state after state as fast as they can assemble in convention, and by Virginia with like speed,” warning Virginias they needed to prepare for the coming social war, as Mason put it.” [1]
