Ann Mason Mourning Ring

Description

A lozenge shaped mourning ring made of gold, dating c. 1773. The shank is plain, with wide shoulders coming in to the lozenge shaped head. The rim of the head is gold with an engraved arch pattern. The face is covered by glass, under which is a painted image consisting of an urn under a willow; the urn is marked "A.M." On the inside of the head is engraved "Ann Mason obt 9 March 1773, age 39".

Ring was made to commemorate the death of Ann Mason in 1773. It is similar in appearance to other rings that descended in the Mason family. This ring descended through the family of John Mason of Analostan.

Originally given to John Mason in memory of his mother. To his daught Catherine Mason Jamison, to her daughter Eliza Mason Jamison Hodges, to her son Mason Jamison Hodges, to his niece Ann Mason Hodges.
