This article is an address to the public by Armistead Mason on a public disagreement between himself and John McCarty, a resident of Alexandria, in which both men exchanged insults in public. The dispute arose out of political differences and a contested seat for the House of Representatives, with Democrat-Republican Mason running against the Federalist Charles F. Mercer. McCarty entered the dispute between Mason and Mercer, publishing scathing attacks on Mason. This article, written by Mason on Jan. 31, was published following his death in that fateful duel on Feb. 6, 1819
