A brief exchange between Senator Mason and Senator Benjamin Wade of Ohio is worthy of note: Wade voiced a few objections to the spirit of the resolutions, claiming that they would only serve to further excite the already high tensions in the country in the wake of Harper's Ferry. Mason assured Wade that the Select Committee would only seek to investigate the causes and material facts of the Harper's Ferry incident as fully as possible, rather than the Northern complicity suspected by the South. Sectional tensions between North and South reached a fever pitch nevertheless, and the Country tumbled along towards its inexorable and bloody destiny.</text>

<text>On June 15th, 1860, Mason read the report of the Senate Select Committee on the Harper's Ferry Invasion. While the material facts of the invasion was a relatively straightforward matter of receiving sworn testimonies from surviving witnesses (both town residents and survivors of Brown's company), the Committee also sought to investigate the precise nature and degree of material and financial support that John Brown received from Abolitionist groups and individuals. As the effects of John Brown's raid rippled throughout the nation, the Senate investigation became just as much an interrogation of Abolitionism as it was an interrogation into the raid itself. </text>

<text>On January 29th, 1850, Henry Clay rose to introduce a series of measures intended to resolve the divisive “slavery question” once and for all. A series of debates would ensue over the rest of the year over the resolutions, making the Compromise of 1850 the central focus of the 31st Congress. A committee of 13 was formed to deliberate on the resolutions and present their findings to the rest of the Senate. Henry Clay read the report of this committee to Senate on May 8th, 1850. At every turn, Mason stood opposed to the "Compromise Measures" as a whole, taking issue with any effort to bar Slavery from the western territories, bring in more free states into the Union, or to ban slavery in any location (such as the District of Columbia,) citing concerns of fugitive slaves from Virginia being given extra incentive to flee to the North, placing even greater financial burden on his slaveholding constituents. On both January 29th and on May 8th, Mason was recorded as speaking up in opposition after Senator Clay's remarks.</text>
