Title

James Murray Mason: Report of the Select Committee investigating the late Harper's Ferry Invasion

Delivered on the floor of the Senate, June 15th 1860.

Subject

Harper's Ferry, United States Senate, James Murray Mason, Senate Investigation, Select Committee

Description

On June 15th, 1860, Mason read the report of the Senate Select Committee on the Harper's Ferry Invasion. While the material facts of the invasion was a relatively straightforward matter of receiving sworn testimonies from surviving witnesses (both town residents and survivors of Brown's company), the Committee also sought to investigate the precise nature and degree of material and financial support that John Brown received from Abolitionist groups and individuals. As the effects of John Brown's raid rippled throughout the nation, the Senate investigation became just as much an interrogation of Abolitionism as it was an interrogation into the raid itself.
