Debates on the Vermont Resolutions of 1850, with a response from Senator John P. Hale of New Hampshire

Subject

United States Senate, 1850, 31st Congress, Congressional Globe, James Murray Mason, Vermont Resolutions, Slavery

Description

James Murray Mason commented on the Vermont Resolutions, casting opproborium on the notion that any state of the Union should refer to an institution present in a large share of her sister states as a "crime," and suggested that it is no threat to claim that any such state would resort to disunion if that was necessary to protect her "honor."

He is responded to by John P. Hale of New Hampshire, who, to the humor of the rest of the chamber, claims that Mason is taking the publication of petty "resolutions" much too seriously. In time, however, the Southern Slave states would make good on Mason's promises.
